Week 4 — 4 Oct 2004

Subject: It's Monday...

...I'm back from Vegas, and the Redskins didn't help my wallet at all. But wow was it great to be able to watch several games at a time on such huge screens, even if the band of Eagles fans was annoying.

So, other than the Redskins/Browns not going over the over/under and blowing my 36:1 parlay card, what else happened this week?

New England and the NY Jets both won their third game, to remain undefeated (3-0). Atlanta and Philadelphia also both won, to go 4-0. And then there were four.

In contrast: San Francisco, Tampa Bay and Miami are 0-4. Buffalo is 0-3 and has had their bye. Congratulations to the Arizona Cardinals for getting off of this list by beating the Saints.

And then, there is the Kansas City chiefs. Back in pre-season, it looked like the Chiefs might be playoff-bound this year. But they've started the season 0-3, and have quite a battle in front of them... In bal-mor, where the Ravens have gone 8-1 over the last two seasons.

That one loss? To the Chiefs last year.

Yep. Tonight the 0-3 Kansas City Chiefs travel to the still shiny and new M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to take on the 2-1 Ravens in front of 68,400 fans, on a unique, ultra-modern artificial turf developed in Canada, instead of that astrodome crap from Houston. Nobody else in the NFL uses this stuff... yet. Think that's got anything to do with the 8-1 record on that field?

Despite the lopsided records (and perhaps some difficulty stopping the run on both sides of the field), this might actually be a decent game.

And I'm sure there will be mention of the dark, snowy day in March of 1984, when the Colts left Baltimore in the middle of the night, just so they could continue to be a losing team in another city. That's always good for a chuckle or two.

The Game: Kansas City Chiefs at Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium at Camden Yards. Baltimore, MD.

The Line: (The smart money won last week. It is now 1-1.) Baltimore is favored by 6.5. The over/under is 41. The smart money takes Baltimore, even with the spread.

The Bar: This week, we're going to go a little further away than we usually go, but no, this isn't the week that we're going to Colma. Watch out for the volvos and strollers, 'cause tonight we're going to Noe Valley.
